Karen B. Dawson, Attorney at Law

Karen B. Dawson, Attorney at Law

My Dad didn’t want me to go to law school.  He thought I had a gift for teaching and should therefore become a math teacher.  But I wanted to help people negotiate their way through sticky situations and complex problems.  Little did we know that as an estate lawyer I could be both a problem solver and a teacher.  And now that I have helped my dear Dad plan his own estate, he seems pleased to have an attorney in the family.

Both my Mom and Dad helped me to get a top rate education.  Before graduating from Claremont McKenna College in California (B.A. cum laude with a dual major in American Studies and Math 1989), I was able to attend summer school at Harvard College and a semester abroad at La Sorbonne in Paris.  Then I worked and travelled a couple of years before enrolling at Columbia Law School in New York City (J.D. 1994).  I married my sweetheart half way through law school and when he started his studies at UC Berkeley, Boalt Hall School of Law, I completed my credits there and graduated from Columbia.

My husband and I started a family in California – a pathway that would sooner or later pull us home to the Northwest.  Altogether we stayed in the Bay Area for six wonderful years – six years full of sunshine, babies and hard work (I was an immigration attorney, he was a litigator).  But California was neither close enough to home nor affordable so we moved to Oregon.  My husband partnered with his Dad (thus creating Dawson Law Group, P.C.) and I threw myself into being a full-time parent, school volunteer and help-mate.

In 2007, I opened the Law Office of Karen B Dawson PC, a firm solely devoted to estate planning and administration.  Owning my own practice has proven to be an exciting time of personal growth, intellectual stimulation and above all a reawakening of my passion for law.  Estate planning and administration is a wonderful area in which I can be both a teacher and a creative problem solver.

In this technological age, my firm is both small and large.  My small staff keeps my overhead low and allows me to focus on what I do best – providing attentive, personal legal service.  And thanks to advances in technology, I have the resources of a larger firm at my fingertips through access to a collegiate group of peers (the proverbial “partner down the hall”) within Oregon and across the nation.
